{Part 2} When Mountains Don't Move Devotional Series

Hey Reader,

Welcome to Part Two of our When Mountains Don’t Move series. Last week, we looked at Mount Sinai and how God often reveals His covenant nature in the stillness of solitude. This week, we’re shifting from the quiet of the mountain top to the intensity of the crowd.

Some mountains require us to stand alone, but others require us to stand among many—sometimes in the middle of open opposition. In today’s devotional, we’ll step onto Mount Carmel with Elijah and see how God uses these moments of confrontation to display His all-powerful nature to a watching world.

"...O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel..." 1 King 18:36 (ESV)

Some mountains require for us to stand alone, while others require us to stand among crowds. Mount Carmel illustrates this second type of mountain experience, where God reveals His all-powerful nature through dramatic demonstration. Unlike Moses' solitary ascent, Elijah climbed Carmel surrounded by 450 prophets of Baal and a nation caught between two loyalties.

The context matters deeply. Israel faced severe drought, and instead of crying out to their covenant God, they had turned to Baal, supposedly the god of fertility and rain. Their crisis revealed their divided hearts. Sound familiar? When circumstances overwhelm us, we too can be tempted to seek solutions everywhere except from our faithful God.

Elijah's prayer in 1 Kings 18:36-37 cuts straight to the heart: "O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel... Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that this people may know that you, O Lord, are God" (ESV). Notice his burden, not personal vindication, but God's reputation among the watching world.

God's response was immediate and overwhelming. Fire fell from heaven, consuming not just the sacrifice but the stones, dust, and water surrounding it. The message was unmistakable: the Lord alone is God.

When you find yourself as the only genuine believer in your workplace, school, or community, or when you're surrounded by those who claim faith but live in rebellion, you're experiencing a Mount Carmel moment. God hasn't placed you there by accident. Mountains of confrontation teach us that God's power is most visible when opposition is greatest. Like Elijah, your faithfulness becomes the stage upon which God displays His might. The mountain becomes a platform for divine demonstration, proving to skeptical hearts that the Lord alone is God. Your Mount Carmel moments aren't accidents of placement, but they're strategic appointments where God reveals His all-powerful nature through ordinary believers willing to stand firm.

Reader, where has God positioned you to be His witness among unbelievers or rebellious believers? How might He demonstrate His power through your faithful presence?
